How to enhance your storytelling

The workshop will be taught by award-winning professional photographers with more than 15 years individual experiences. It provides an insight into the world of photography and teaches participants how to put their idea and their works together with professional manner.

This hands-on workshop is exclusively for photographers who want to enhance their visual storytelling skills and create their distinct expression style.

GOAL:

Through the Three-days weekend workshop participants will experience up-to-date professional information, practical exercises and one-to-one sessions with tutors.
At the end of the workshop, participants will have a clearer idea of what is storytelling, improved skills and be much more confident with photo-editing on their own.


PROGRAM

April 27th, Friday evening

7,30pm / Presentation given by Fred DUFOUR and Nicolas Datiche explaining about their work. Casual talk in downtown.

The talk is a good opportunity to approach photojournalism with photographers who are freelancer as well.

Informal meeting to discuss project ideas to develop during the 3 days with students

Free admission. You can come with a guest.

 

April 28th, Saturday
“How long do we wait for a good picture?”

Practice how to shoot the decisive moment, the know-how of framing in street photography and shoot in the expected composition.
On «assignment » day, you will have a task given by teachers. The mission is to work as if you are having a magazine assignment and need to shoot a story for 4-6 pages. What kind of pictures, how to deal with framing for a magazine story and what kind of pictures editors expect.

Shooting in Shibuya

From 9am to 12pm : quick shooting around Shibuya. This exercise aims to create complicity between people and  with the subjects.  We wish to see your progress, to be more confidence and creative in difficult situations.

From 2pm to 4pm : Group review each participant existing portfolio

From 5pm to 9pm : Shooting time

April 29th, Sunday

From 9am to 12pm :Ongoing work review. It will be viewed as a group and critiqued by your tutors.

2pm-8pm : Shooting

April 30th, Monday

One-day assignement at the foot of Fuji Montain: Leaving early morning from Tokyo and work in this specific touristic place, far from the city center to apply the rules and skills learnt previously. Back in the afternoon, the editing will be done after, all together on wide screen

8am: Leaving Tokyo by train

2:30pm/ Back to Tokyo.

Edit of approx. 20 images shot from the day.

Preparation of the Newspaper layout to be printed.

Evening : Workshop participants slideshow open to the public.

 

 

Open to anyone who wants to upgrade visual storytelling skills and approach photojournalism. Students needs to bring a laptop with photo editing software (ex. Lightroom, Photoshop) and a digital camera. A heavy DSLR or a huge set of lenses is not required. The idea is to use the camera you are familiar with for documentary/ streetphotography.

Fee for the 3 days workshop
Early birds (until April 15th 2018) : 290€ / ¥38.000
Normal fee (from April 16th 2018) : 340€ / ¥44.500

Please note: WPJ Insitute reserves the right to cancel groups with less than 8 participants. Students will be given either a full refund. In the event of a cancellation, students will be given at least 10 days advance notice.
